Historical Context
The European clash and memories of 1979. The two clubs have a special connection, also competing in Forest's previous European adventure in the mid-90s European competition, but it is the continental championship 46 years ago that entwines these two together, with the groundbreaking transfer Trevor Francis heading the only goal of a pretty miserable final to clinch eternal glory for the the English club.
"Forest's famous bosses, modestly dressed amid all the excitement and joy, stood for a moment on a bench calmly observing the mafficking," wrote the match reporter. This represented an outstanding achievement that it is difficult to imagine happening again – from second tier to European stage in just three years."
It's also interesting to consider Malmö, who became the initial and final Swedish club to advance to the ultimate game under British coach Houghton.
This match is a distant from that summit, closer perhaps to the previous continental meeting between Forest and Malmö in 1995-96. Forest are absolutely buzzing after defeating Liverpool convincingly at the famous ground on Saturday, while Malmö have been inactive since last month following the completion of Allsvenskan. The general expectation is on the Forest tonight.
Numerous other matches on offer in this live coverage. The Scottish side have already been beaten by a European rival this season. Rangers are last place of the competition table at the midpoint of the group stage with exactly zero. They desperately need a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a recovery for a playoff spot.
Updates will continue with all nine of the 8pm kick-offs and provide the latest scores from the previous games, including the Birmingham match and Feyenoord v Celtic.
